I have been wondering what to major in for a while now. Some of the majors that sparked my interest were Environmental Science, Sports Management, Criminal Justice, and Finance. I liked thought of having a major in Finance so I decided to do my interview with a professor in that field. This brought me to Dr. Haririan who teaches personal finance. She was a very nice and personable lady who was welcoming and open to questions I had. I wasn’t sure if there was a lot of writing in this field compared to other majors such as an education major. I found out that it is pretty close to an education major. Dr. Haririan explained to me that there are many different forms of writing that she does in her field. Some of these writings include research papers and conference topics. When I went more in depth with the type of writing she does on an average day, she explained that the majority of it was emails, notes, and some research. These made a lot of sense when thinking about being in this type of work environment. She also explained that the purpose of these writings sometimes were for recommendation letters. The audiences for the writings are for students, co-workers, organizations, different colleges, and clients. These really relate to this type of profession when working. Clients are especially important when communicating through writing because they are the ones you make your living off of sometimes. when I asked her what she gets out of the writing she does, she explained how it further shows your expertise in presentations and also shows professionalism. Dr. Haririan did not have a specific research article that she admires, but she did have magazines that she reads frequently. She likes to read articles from magazines such as the Wall Street Journal, Money Magazine, and Applied Finance. These different magazines give you good insight on what is going on in your field and also gives tips that will help be more successful in the future.
